9 Women -- Claudia Hanson-Thiem, Darcy McPhee, Kara Wittman, Emily Rains, Natalie Dye, Michele Minihane, Sharon Houck, Chris Chan, and Erika Monahan -- gathered at Lover's Leap in South Lake Tahoe for SAC's first all women Girls Crank weeekend.
Sharon, Darcy, Chris, and Kara started the weekend early by climbing on Friday, with Darcy and Sharon swinging leads on Hogsback's Deception and Harvey Wallbanger's Left. Chris and Kara did East Crack and then dove into the brush for some grunge-climbing up the untracked west end of Hogsback.
On Saturday, five of the group trekked back to Hogsback to dominate that rock, with Kara and Natalie swinging leads on Harvey Wallbanger Left, Michele and Sharon swinging on HW Center, and then Kara and Emily finishing up with a mellow attack of Knapsack. Claudia and Michele each got on the pointy end of the rope for Deception while Sharon and Darcy happily sherpa'd gear.
On the other side of the creek, Claudia and Erika got out super early (before 10am even) on The Line and impressed all the boys. Chris and Darcy rocked the crowd with Haystack and the ever run-out Scimitar, while Natalie swapped with Claudia to finish the day on the classic Surrealistic Pillar Direct with Erika (why yes, that is the 10a off-width). Erika led the burly and fun direct start for the first pitch--that was fun! For the second pitch we moved left below the big offwidth, but then back into the crack instead of going farther left and out around the arete. Natalie took the final pitch in style.
On Sunday we cragged on cracks that spanned a range of sizes from finger to offwidth. We put up two topropes at Dear John Buttress and one on Surealistic Pillar Direct. Later in the day Erika gave Rehab a go on DJB: it turned into her first aid lead. At 4:30 pm Chris Chan, Claudia and Erika scooted up to finish off the day w/ Corrrugation Corner. Chris led all three pitches which made climbing as a party of 3 go fast.
It turned out that some SAC men "infiltrated" our womens weekend. We found Paul, Alexis and Sam lurking on Travelers' Buttress. The men, slyly utilizing a 5-hour headstart, topped out just moments before us (which would not have been the case if Claudia had not so valiantly tried to remove the fixed cam from the final anchor because Erika mistakenly thought it was Chris'). We were back to the campsite by dark.
