The first is a lengthy discussion of John Schneider (one of the actors from the original Dukes of Hazzard) and his love of driving along route 66. he tells the reporter about several memorable incidents that occurred while driving, and explains that he got his love of driving from the long car trips he took with his parents as a child. he recently relived that experience, making a long driving trip with his father which reminded them both of earlier trips. however, most of john's recent trips, and indeed most trips referenced in the magazine, are not travel to get form point a to point b, but instead travel for travels sake, to see what you find. he says 'i'm one of those crazy people, that even though I know the road is going to end in five miles, or ten miles, or fifteen miles, i still go down it, so i can touch the end, then turn around and come back'. the appeal is finding all of the little nostalgic out of the way tourist attractions, traveling at a leisurely pace instead of with a plan and a deadline, and concentrating on the experience rather than the destination. he admits that his children and wife 'sometimes cna't understand why he would always rather drive than fly'. i'm imagining here, because they don't give details of his vehicle other than to say that he doesn't drive the general lee he kept from the dukes of hazzard, that they probably don't have a lot of media gear in their car, because it would detract from the nostalgic atmosphere and from their ability to explore whatever is coming up around the next curve.
the second is a review of the lincoln navigator as a long distance working vehicle. the same 'sport truck connection television' show that advertized elsewhere took the suv out for three weeks. they primarily discuss the places they went instead of the vehicle's performance, but they do mention that in snowy areas the 'powered rear lift gate' was really handy, because it meant that suitcases could stay dry instead of being put down in the snow, and hands likewise, becasue they didn't have to mess with the rear of the suv, which was covered in road spray/ick. they also approved of the GS navigation system, which helped them get to all of their destinations.
