Description
Our main split is between:
- converged technologies
- totally discrete technologies
However, convergence can take either of two routes:
Converged 1
"Convergence of discrete solutions"
"middleware"
requires
- standards
- cooperation
- legislattion
Converged 2
- Converged packaged solutions (e.g. Google model)
- Ok for DC unless collaborator == content creator e.g. Sony
Meanwhile, "Totally Discrete" looks something like this:
Totally Discrete (TD)
- clunky
- each individual sevice might be good but don't talk to each other well
- tech progesses but convergence doesn't
- e.g. iPod interface available now (cassette on wire)
- lack of standards
- big cross industry partnerships (David Platt: Ralph I can't read this - could you correct it?)
- DRM
- appearance of a "killer app"
- lack of demand ("I don't need a PDA -- I can use a notebook)
- lack of multidisiciplinary orgs/ firms (e.g. Google, eBay)
- communication/ cooperation
- collective action
- Nash equilibriums (aggregate outcomes)
Most of these change drivers would count as "technical."
