iPhone Tethering – An iPass Alternative

by on January 26, 2011 at 11:49 am

Stanford’s IT Services announced earlier this month that Stanford will no longer subsidize iPass. For iPass users, this is potentially a deal-breaker since the cost has increased from $10 per month to $54 per month.

If you have an iPhone with a tethering plan, do not despair. Wherever you can find a 3G connection, you can use that connection for your iPhone via either Bluetooth or USB. And it is very easy.

Step 1: On the iPhone, go to Settings > General > Network. On the network screen, you should see an option to turn Internet Tethering on.
Step 2: Follow the steps on the Internet Tethering screen to connect to your laptop by either USB or Bluetooth.

I tend to prefer tethering over USB so that at least the iPhone battery is not getting drained while sharing the Internet connection. Works well!
