DOUBLE–DOUBLE: Simplifying the Design and Manufacture of Composite Laminates

Stephen W. Tsai
Brian G. Falzon
Ali Aravand

"In every instance of our discoveries, advances and new test data, DD has demonstrated to us its truly revolutionary nature. First of all, our goal for simplicity, as opposed to complexity, is being realised. DD is orderly, compact, and easy to manipulate. It is field-based, so existing rules of transformation and manipulation are correct and credible. Subjective choices in stacking sequence, blending, round-off plies, and many design rules are not only of questionable value but also inflict unnecessary complexity. Current design of components can call for doz- ens, if not hundreds of laminates that can be replaced by one DD laminate, with aggressive taper, single ply drops placed on the exterior surface, with no internal defects, no warpage, and easy to inspect and repair. DD can be described by one parameter in trace for stiffness and the effective radius of equal area of failure envelopes for strength. Rating and scaling are possible. Subjectivity is replaced by objectivity. Optimization becomes significantly more tractable for complex geometries and loading conditions."
