Che, Dewei & Bodomo, Adams: A Constraint-Based Analysis of the Objects of VO Verbal Compounds in Mandarin Chinese

VO verbal compounds (VOCs) have become a topical issue within studies on wordhood and the syntax-semantics interface. However, the issue can become more complicated when VOCs take an extra object. Some previous analyses have often run into difficulty mostly because they assign the wrong grammatical function to these objects in question. This paper builds its basic account on the traditional LFG analysis of idiom chunks and applies it to the VOCs in Mandarin Chinese by adopting the ideas of Bresnan (1982), combined with recent findings from Zhuang et al (2013). The description and analysis especially focus on lexical discontinuity and double object realization of VOCs and thus provide a foundation for a generalized account of the representation of VOCs within the LFG framework.
