The Designing Education Lab, headed by Professor Sheri Sheppard, works to improve engineering education by investigating everything from retention rates in college engineering programs to the impact of entrepreneurship classes on engineering curriculum. By designing research protocol to investigate various aspects of these issues, the Designing Education Lab aims to put their findings into practice by reforming engineering course curriculum both at Stanford and to make their findings available so that other schools can do the same. This website contains information about the various research projects that the team has worked on, papers that have been published as a result of that research and the research tools used in obtaining that research.

About Us

DEL_logo.jpg
The Designing Education Lab (DEL), led by Professor Sheri Sheppard, investigates a broad range of engineering education topics, from the persistence of students and alumni in engineering fields to the impact of exposure to entrepreneurship on engineering students' career interests. DEL researchers are engaged in national and international collaborations with colleagues within and outside of engineering.

Our activities and projects emphasize the relationship of research TO academic and professional practice by informing the redesign of engineering course pedagogy and curriculum and DISSEMINATION of findings in conference presentations, workshops, webinars, online resources, and publications.

DEL scholars are driven to:

  • explore what it means to be a 21st century engineer.
    • Learn more about some of our research projects at Research Projects (on left)
  • design, implement and assess research-informed educational tools.
    • Learn more about existing and under-design tools at Curricular Tools (on left)
  • support the larger community engaged in educational research and novel educational methods.
    • Learn more about our community building efforts at Community Building (on left)

The lab is located in the Center for Design Research, Building 560, Stanford University.
