This week at designX we are delighted to host Lt. John Nores, Jr., from the California Department of Fish & Game. "Wicked Problems and Social Messes - The Thin Green Line." In the infinite world of problem solving - there exist a set of extremely complicated and challenging problems known as "wicked problems" or "social messes" that by definition are nearly impossible to solve - but may instead be managed within existing restraints and resources. Lt. Nores' presentation and discussion focuses on a wicked problem, a social mess that you may not be aware of. The public lands of California and other states are under siege by lawbreakers who are damaging the fragile environment while growing illegal crops. The illegal substances are distributed and sold to fund other criminal activities. The illegal growers are diverting waterways, polluting pristine wilderness with trash and toxic chemicals, poaching fish and wildlife, committing firearms offenses, and pose a dangerous threat to hikers, mountain bikers, and others venturing outdoors.

Silicon Valley's core competence lies in the rapid scaling of new technologies and innovations to a global level. Venture investors seek out those entrepreneurs with products and business models that "scale" well, because those startups typically secure the greatest valuations and return on investment. While "scalability" is a selection criterion used on a daily basis in the investment community, it is also frequently employed as a core design objective by engineers in a number of technical domains. What, then, do we really mean when say something is "scalable" or "scales well"? This talk looks at what "scale", "scaling" and "scalability" mean for different classes of products and services, and how "scalability" - or "amplification of impact" - is a fundamental goal and historical paradigm shift that span the design and behavior of systems and organizations ranging from iPhones to the Internet, to corporations and entire regional economies.

Dr. Burton Lee is a Lecturer in the Mechanical Engineering Department's Center for Design Research (CDR). He teaches European Entrepreneurship and Innovation (ME421) each Winter Quarter. His Ph.D. research focused on Internet-based remote diagnostics of complex mechatronic equipment, and the use of common knowledge representations across design and diagnostic models.

Thomas Visser - StudioLab of the Delft University of Technology - Presentation on an interactive product named "SnowGlobe", which is a lamp for the home environment that allows communication with another person who has a SnowGlobe installed. It detects movement and 'shaking', and communicates this to the remote globe by making it shine brighter or blink. SnowGlobe is a tool for studying effects of low-bandwidth communication on social well-being. Thomas is currently investigating those behaviors and experiences in a controlled lab setting at the CHIMe lab of Prof. Clifford Nass, here at Stanford. Thomas will also discuss some of the HCI aspects of his research and findings.

Jochen Schweitzer and Nathan Kirchner of the University of Technology, Sydney - "Design Research Down Under - Direction and Challenges ahead" Jochen and Nathan will talk about research at the University of Technology Sydney and some of their current own projects at the Centre for Management and Organisation Studies (CMOS) and the Centre for Intelligent Mechatronic Systems (CIMS). They will discuss the purpose of their group's visit to Stanford University and plan to pose a challenging question.

Note: Larry Leifer is on travel this week and will not be attending designX
