Short Biography

Moin is the founding director of the Center for Turbulence Research (CTR) and the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering (IMCE) at Stanford. Established in 1987, the Center for Turbulence Research is devoted to fundamental studies of turbulent flows. Center for Turbulence Research is widely recognized as the international focal point for turbulence research, attracting diverse groups of researchers from engineering, mathematics and physics.

Professor Moin pioneered the use of direct and Large Eddy Simulation techniques for the study of turbulence physics, control and modelling concepts and has written widely on the structure of turbulent shear flows. He is an Co-editor of the Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics and Associate Editor of the Journal of Computational Physics.

Awards and Honors

Professor Moin has been awarded NASA's Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal, the AIAA Lawrence Sperry Award, AIAA Fluid Dynamics Award, the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal, the Outstanding Achievement Award of the University of Minnesota, the Humboldt Prize of the Federal Republic of Germany, a Doctores Honoris Causa from the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid. In 2009, he was recognized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences with an Einstein Professorship. In 2013, he was inducted as a foreign member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Engineering. Professor Moin is the recipient of the APS Fluid Dynamics Prize. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences.
