This is an interactive supplement to the portfolio “The Long Draw,” which appears in the January 2012 issue of Harper’s Magazine. The hand-drawn maps are by Friedrich von Egloffstein, a forgotten cartographer and landscape artist of the American West. The first map shows the Ives expedition of 1857–8; the other reconstructs portions of the Gunnison-Beckwith expedition of 1853–4.
