Stanford Closes Out Regular Season, Heads to Playoffs with 11-8 Record

Through a grueling gauntlet of division games, Stanford hockey finished its regular season with 8 games over the past 5 weeks, including three straight double-header weekends. In their 8-game stretch since Winter Break, Stanford has only dropped one game, a loss to Santa Rosa that may have cost the Cardinal the first seed in the playoffs. With wins over division opponents Santa Cruz and UC Davis this past weekend, Stanford heads comfortably into the playoffs on a 3-game win streak, and will face Santa Clara this Friday for a chance to play in the championship game on Saturday. The team cruised through the second half of their season, only losing one of 8 and securing each of their wins by at least two points, many of which were blowouts as Stanford notched double-digit goals in three separate games since Christmas. With a dominating 10-4 record in division, Stanford faces their best chance at a trophy in years, and has beaten each of the 4 division teams at least once.

Hopefully this weekend will give the Cardinal some momentum as they secured two easy wins against UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis with final scores of 7-4 and 6-4 respectively. Stanford was only able to field two lines for each of the games, and hopefully can get some additional reinforcements next weekend. It was an all-time weekend for defenseman Ian Chen, who registered 5 goals and 3 assists over the course of the two games. Captain Woody Wang also continued his excellent year, passing 40 points this weekend with a total 17 goals and 24 assists this season. The Cardinal will need their stars to shine in the playoffs as they face a stingy Santa Clara team with good goaltending, but can head into the matchup with some confidence after besting Santa Clara 5-3 in their last meeting. Catch the action this Friday at the Nazareth Ice Oasis in San Mateo (game time TBD).
