Instructors

Sensei Masataka Mori, 8th Dan, is the chief instructor of our parent organization, Shotokan Karate-Do International, one of the two JKA-recognized karate organizations in the Pan American region. Originally from Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan, Sensei Mori began studying karate when he joined Takushoku University; he graduated in 1955 and joined the Japan Karate Association in 1957. In 1963, Mori Sensei became the chief instructor of the Hawaii JKA, after which he moved to the current SKdI headquarters in New York City in 1968. Sensei Kenichi Haramoto, 6th Dan, is the founder and chief instructor of the Northern California branch of the JKA. He began his training in Tokyo, Japan in 1962; in 1966, Sensei Haramoto participated in the All Japan Collegiate Karate Championship Tournament and won the first place together with his Aoyama Gakuin University Karate Club team. Later, while earning his MBA at Aoyama Gakuin Graduate School, he taught JKA Shotokan karate at the university. Sensei Haramoto came to the United States in 1970, establishing the JKA of Northern California, headquartered in San Francisco. In 1975, Sensei Haramoto was appointed judge at the World Karate-Do Championship Tournament. Click here to read more about Sensei Haramoto's organization.
