False Criteria for Abuse

“It is not relationship abuse unless…”

Some myths give us false criteria for defining relationship abuse. Some common examples are:

“If he doesn’t hit her then it is not abuse.”

“I don’t see any marks, so it must not be abuse.”

Relationship abuse is not just physical. Other types of abuse include verbal, emotional, sexual and economic abuse, and all of these forms of abuse in relationships can occur without physical abuse. Additionally, abusers often strategically injure their partners so that the signs are not visible, so physical abuse may be present even if you cannot see the marks.
