Project Summary

Delivering wireless computing and communication services (broadband Internet) to the passengers of high-speed vehicles, like ‘bullet trains’ traveling at over 300Km/hr across (or under) densely populated cities and open fields or through forests, is a challenging task for modern wireless networking technologies. Key problems include the very high mobility levels and hand-off control, the diversity of environments in which the service has to operate seamlessly, the need for agile management of congestion hotspots, etc.

In this joint DT/Stanford project, we are investigating novel network architectures (and protocols/algorithms) and resource management schemes, which can enable next-generation broadband wireless Internet access to passengers of high-speed vehicles for various applications, including ‘mobile office’ and entertainment-oriented ones. Issues addressed include suitability of radio interfaces, access point and gateway technology, mobility management and connectivity maintenance, network planning and design, TCP support over high-mobility wireless links and power control, on-line congestion management, etc. Moreover, we consider issues of vertically (across the protocol stack) and horizontally (across technology platforms) integrated design, which are needed to address the challenges outlined above.
