Frequently Asked Questions
Are Western instruments used in SCME?
Yes! We use cello in our lower register and occasionally Western percussion instruments. Cellists and percussionists interested in traditional Chinese music are welcome to join!
How transferable are techniques on Western instruments to Chinese instruments?
– String players (violinists, violists, cellists, etc.) will find it relatively easy to learn Chinese bowed-string instruments such as Erhu and Zhonghu.
– Guitar/mandolin players will be able to learn the basics Chinese plucked-string instruments, such as Pipa, Ruan, and Liuqin, rather quickly.
– Harp players will find Guzheng techniques similar to those on the harp.
– Woodwind players will find similarities between Chinese Dizi and Western flute.
– Brass players have advantages in learning instruments such as Suona.
– Percussionists perhaps have the most transferable techniques when it comes to learning Chinese percussion instruments!
See our page on Chinese Instruments for more details.
Can community members (non-Stanford students/faculty/staff) join SCME?
Yes! But since our funding comes from Stanford affiliated entities, we are mandated to spend the funding in a way that directly benefits Stanford students. Thus, a participation fee may apply per quarter for local and non-Stanford members.
