Montastero dell'Vmiltà delle Sore Domenicane |
While both churches in this print date from the 1680s, S. Maria delle Vergini by Mattia De Rossi retains the strict two-level facade associated with the late Renaissance, while S. Maria dell'Umiltà (2) by Carlo Fontana has a more unified Baroque facade framed by giant-order pilasters. Its adjacent Domenican convent (3) flanks it to the right. The carriage in the foreground, which narrowly missed running over the gentleman headed for the church of the Vergini, has come from Via dell'Umiltà, which becomes the Salita or Ascent of Monte Cavallo (1) now Via della Dataria) as it climbs up to the Piazza del Quirinale, Plate 61. The street on the left leads to the Fontana di Trevi, Plate 104, which is only fews steps away.
