Disegno di Bernardo Gamucci, come stava due Secoli fà |
The title, Disegno dell'Anticaglia (1) refers to a large fragment of entablature from the ancient Temple of Serapis, still visible today in the Colonna garden, Plate 193. The temple was built on the top of the Quirinal hill by the emperor Caracalla (211-217), with a long, wide stair leading down to the Campo Marzio level. Most of the print reproduces a view by Bernardo Gamucci of 1565 (2) which shows the ruined status of the temple after the middle ages, but much of this was destroyed in 1625. Nolli represents the remains of the stair and part of the temple in thick black lines. These remains were used as foundations for the Casino nuovo (new building) on the Vasi view of the Colonna garden. Most of this structure was demolished to make way for the Pontifical Gregorian University built in 1930, facing onto Piazza della Pilotta (NN 293).
