Last season, Stanford placed 3rd in the Conroy Cup (D Division) and finished the season ranked 27th in the nation. The Cardinal will be looking to move up in the rankings this year with the goal of vying for a national championship in their division and remaining the top ranked club team. After graduating three seniors from last year’s team, Stanford will be looking to the upperclassmen to fill the void at the top and middle of the lineup, with Captain Parker Odrich, and seniors Peter Satterthwaite and Matthew Stevens leading the team.
“We have strong senior leadership this season, and with the addition of two talented freshmen and a solid core of sophomores and juniors, we should make a strong push for the division crown this year” according to head coach Mark Talbott. The Cardinal already kicked off their 2016-2017 season with a 9-0 win against the University of Southern California just one week into the academic year. Next up on the schedule is a match against a great Naval Academy team at Stanford later in October. Stanford will then travel to Annapolis in mid November to take on other teams vying for the Conroy Cup, including rival MIT.
“Stanford always has very entertaining and close matches with MIT, so the whole team is looking forward to playing them again this year.” Talbott said. “Our goal for that trip in general is to be competitive and to try to win every match.”
The team will also play division rivals Denison, Bucknell, and Hobart during that trip before heading home for Thanksgiving and winter break. Stanford will then take on a very good Franklin and Marshall squad at Stanford in mid January to kick off a busy winter quarter. With a trip to Amherst and matches at home against other west coast teams, expect the Cardinal to be prepared and ready to capture the Conroy Cup when Nationals roll around in mid February at Harvard.
