2019 Concerto Competition
Kwyn Demmert ’22 is an undergraduate student at Stanford University majoring in physics. He started his musical studies at the age of 6, in Kingston, Washington, as a violin student of Mino Christante. He began playing oboe in his middle school’s concert band and studied with Amy Duer-Day. In High School, Kwyn took lessons with Dan Williams, Principal Oboe of the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra.
While in high school, Kwyn was a member of the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra. He was a three-time winner of the Olympic Music Educators Association Solo and Ensemble Contest as well as placing 3rd in the Washington Music Educators Association Solo and Ensemble Contest in his senior year. Kwyn was also a member of Washington’s All-State Wind Ensemble and the All-Northwest Concert Band. In addition, Kwyn attended the Marrowstone Music Festival for two summers performing with both the Philharmonic and Festival Orchestras. At the festival, he studied with Roger Cole, Principal Oboe of the Vancouver Symphony.
At Stanford, Kwyn performs with both the Stanford Symphony Orchestra and Stanford Philharmonia and takes lessons with Robin May. He has been a member of both orchestras since the beginning of his freshman year.
Andrea Chung is a graduate student in Documentary Film and Video with a bachelor’s degree in Film and New Media from New York University Abu Dhabi. Born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan, Andrea began her studies in bassoon at the age of eight, after being accepted into the country’s premier program for talented music students with her performance in the piano. Andrea’s bassoon performance has placed first at the Taiwanese National Student Competition in Music twice, while her work as a chamber and orchestral musician has also received multiple awards.
During her college years, Andrea studied bassoon with Gina Cuffari, as well as chamber music with Celina Charlier and Kathrine Forman Quayle. Andrea has also participated in masterclasses and workshops given by Rebekah Hellar, Akropolis Reed Quintet, and The Silkroad Ensemble. Now at Stanford, Andrea studies under Rufus Olivier, Jr., and is a member of the Stanford Philharmonia
Derek Chung ’22 is an undergraduate student in Music and Computer Science at Stanford University. He currently studies piano with Frederick Weldy and has previously studied with Sueanne Metz. In addition to being a winner of the Stanford Concerto Competition, Derek’s recent accomplishments include the Grand Prize Winner at the Chicago International Music Competition, first place at the MTNA National Senior Piano Competition, Arthur Fraser International Piano Competition, MostArts Festival Piano Competition, and the Los Angeles Young Musician International Piano Competition where he was awarded the overall Best Romantic Performance.
Derek has given public performances with the South Carolina Philharmonic, the MostArts Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonic Orchestra of the University of Alicante, 98.7 WFMT’s ‘Introductions’ radio show, live on Kansas Public Radio, and the Shining Stars Concert as part of the Music Festival of Perugia. He was also a member of chamber group Piano Trio Royale. They were featured on NPR’s From-the-Top program.
Derek was a member of the orchestra for the Department of Music’s musical theatre production of ‘A Little Night Music’. He is also a co-founder of 88Keys to Cure, a non-profit organization promoting classical music for the benefit of various causes.
