Remote Spectral Imaging for Sustainable Ranching and Agriculture. Excess application of nitrogen fertilizer causes unnecessary, groundwater contamination, CO2 emissions, and expenses. We plan to demonstrate that combining aerial photography with spectral analysis will target areas of under/over-application of fertilizer, allowing ranchers to be more efficient with their fertilizer resources. This technology can be used to monitor and synchronize the controlled herd movement and natural rangeland recovery that is the basis of holistic ranching. There are over 450 million acres of pasture land in the US and several billion acres across the globe, creating a huge opportunity to save resources and create a business for an effective service that can achieve a sustainable level of cost and replace the current energy intensive, inefficient, manual screening processes that are employed.
