Astroviruses and Gastroenteritis

Back Home Next

The disease associated with astrovirus infection is viral gastroenteritis which frequently manifests itself as infantile diarrhea.

In incubation period is 1-4 days after which symptoms appear and last for 1-4 days.

Symptoms include watery diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, vomiting, fever, anorexia, and other constitutional symptoms.

Astrovirus gastroenteritis resembles a mild form of Rotavirus gastroenteritis.  Hospitalization is very rare and death is extremely rare, though has been reported.

Immunity probably lasts for years.  Most adults are resistant to experimental astrovirus infection.

Virus shedding can begin a day or two before and a day or two after symptoms.
