Viral Profiles

Poxviruses are generally divided into two subfamilies: Chordopoxvirinae and Entomopoxvirinae. Chordopoxvirinae consists of 8 genera: Orthopoxvirus, Parapoxvirus, Molluscipoxvirus, Yatapoxvirus, Avipoxvirus, Capripoxvirus, Leporipoxvirus, and Suipoxvirus. The first four of the eight genera consist of human viruses.

In the viral profiles, I have examined two viruses in more detail: Monkeypox Virus and Orf Virus. The profiles contain information about the epidemiology, the incubation period, the symptomatology, and the prevention/management of these viruses. Monkeypox virus belongs to the genus Orthopoxvirus, and Orf virus is a Parapoxvirus. If you are interested to learn more about the viral profiles of other viruses, please explore the webpages of previous "Humans and Viruses" students ( Web links).
