Identity Elements

Color

Besides our name and emblems, the most recognizable part of our Identity system is our colors. Cardinal has been Stanford’s official color since the University’s earliest days. Supporting colors are drawn from our campus architecture and the California landscape.

Color Principles

  • Use the identity colors, especially Cardinal Red
Consistenly and appropriately using our identity colors is one of the most effective ways to make sure our communication reflects a recongizable Stanford feel. Please always include Cardinal in your color scheme, either as a background color or as a primary accent color. However, feel free to combine Identity colors for a unique feel that reflects the personality of your unit.
  • Use enough contrast for readability
Colors without enough difference between them can blend together and be hard to read. Use at least 50% contrast between foreground and background - especially for text. Similarly, take care to comply with accessibility guidelines for colorblindness (such as avoiding some color combinations like red on green). For more information or tools to test color for accessibility, refer to the SOAP website or use this Color Analyser.
  • Don't rely on color alone
When communicating emphasis or heirarchy, use size, shape, font weight, placement, etc, in addition to color. Remember, not everyone will be able to differentiate color by itself.

Color Palette

Please do not convert from one color space to another for an individual color. Use Pantone or CMYK values for externally printed pieces, RGB values for documents printed in the office, and HEX numbers for web and digital colors.

Reproducing Color

Color Accuracy

For the purposes of accurate color reproduction across all mediums, we have modified the print Pantone and CMYK colors in a few instances for digital-friendly RGB and Hex values. Please do not convert from one color space to another for an individual color. Instead copy the color space values listed on each color swatch.

Specifically when working with Cardinal Red, start with the correct color space (and source file, where applicable) for your intended medium. When unintentionally converting between CMYK or RGB/Hex (for example, saving an image for web that containes an embedded .eps version of our logos), Cardinal Red can either become too pink or too maroon. Make sure before publishing on the web or at press check that Cardinal Red is the right hue.

For web and digital mediums

For flexibility in meeting accessibility standards on color contrast, we've developed percent shades of colors in our identity palette for Stanford web templates and designs. Generally, with dark text the background should be white, sandstone or beige at 20% or less.
