Little Bird Hopping

A Text-Image Poem

In my now three weeks at Stanford, I’ve found myself aching to write, to create, to divulge more than ever. The sprawling atmosphere of intellectualism and derring-do beg me to explore and make new memories, ones that I’ll remember for a lifetime. My favorite activity to do is take my typewriter out to Lake Lagunita and simply write. It isn’t prose, it isn’t poetry. It is a mix of emotions, experience, soul, and desires. On one such occasion, I decided to write “Little Bird Hopping”, a short personal ‘narrative’ telling of my own struggles to fly, to realize that I am free and that my decisions are mine and mine alone. The metaphor of a bird hopping rather than soaring and me, being enveloped in this new place with the world at my fingertips and yet staying as hesitant as I always have, is the most powerful I could think of to create a short video.

I hope you enjoy “Little Bird Hopping”. While I tossed the idea around in my mind, contemplating millions of ways to create a final product, I realized that some things were out of my reach at the moment and some things would be simple enough to be strong. I began with the three words that started it all, and utilized my own sketch and image of a bird to illuminate the new, lifelike quality that I endeavor to maintain in my days at Stanford, rather than a 2D pencil drawing, sitting still.
