In 1880 Michael, now widowed, was living in Compton, Otter Tail County, Minnesota, with his daughter Louise Hess, also now widowed, and her six children.

Michael Zimmerman died May 29, 1882 at the age of 82 years, 7 months and 5 days. His grave bears a marker with the following inscription:
