Making Light
by Brian Kunde
Frivolous verse is tough to do;
It takes such great big words,
Feminine rhymes, and whimsy, too,
Bouncier meter, all askew,
And similar absurds.

Fold ’em and blend ’em in a bowl,
And brew the mixture brown.
Season to taste, and take a poll.
Query to find out if they’re droll
Enough that they go down.

Weightier topics aren’t addressed;
Use themes as light as froth.
Sprinkle with patter to invest
Something akin to vim and zest
Into the steaming broth.

What if disaster mars the play
And lands it with a thud?
Pick yourself up. Call it a day.
Wasn’t important anyway.
So what if it’s a dud?

Comedy’s littered with the scarred;
It’s fierce beyond restraint.
Finish the game; play every card.
Failure’s easy. Farce is hard.
Don’t let ’em say it ain’t.
