Sorting standards used in index

Forward to A - Back to Coverage of index - Back to QUICK FINDER

  1. The person submitting an article is treated as the author. If the submitter is not the author, but the name of the author is provided, the actual author is also indexed.

  2. Initial articles (A, AN, THE) and punctuation are disregarded in indexing.

  3. The prefix "Mc" in surnames is indexed as if spelled "Mac".

  4. Spaces between words are indexed before "A".

  5. Acronyms are indexed as single words rather than separate initials.

  6. Numerals are indexed as if they were spelled out (with the below exception).

  7. Regular features such as CALENDAR, PERSONNEL NOTES, L&IR DIRECTORS AGENDA, MEYER/BRANCH/SWEET/PUBLIC SERVICES DEPARTMENT HEADS MEETING AGENDA, SUL DIRECTORS AGENDA, and TECHNICAL SERVICES CHIEFS MEETING AGENDA, which incorporate dates in their titles, are indexed in date order rather than strict alphabetical order.

  8. Regular features which have varied in title (LETTERS TO THE EDITOR, L&IR DIRECTORS AGENDA, MEYER/BRANCH/SWEET/PUBLIC SERVICES DEPARTMENT HEADS MEETING AGENDA, TITLES TO MAKE YOU SMILE, and BARCODE TITLES TO MAKE YOU SMILE) are indexed under the latest title of the feature (those just cited) rather than the earlier variant titles. See references are provided for the earlier titles.

  9. All exhibit notices and poems are indexed under EXHIBITS and POETRY, respectively, rather than the individual exhibit and poem titles.
