Rhetorical Analysis of "Sunrise Jog"

David Gross

This essay became an exploration of what a jog is really like when I take one in the morning. When I was writing the piece, it felt very real; I was placing myself back in time to when I had been jogging and experiencing the beauty of nature again through describing it. To conclude the essay, I felt that it needed a circular structure, going back to where I began and coming back to reality after a surreal jog at an hour in the morning when the whole world feels as if it has stopped because the nocturnal and diurnal animals are at opposite transition points in their daily life cycle and very few people are already awake, if any.

I hope this essay shows the reader how spiritual, paradoxically relaxing, and soothing jogging actually is. The reader should imagine himself running along that jogging trail, seeing the berry, squirrel, and the boathouse, but more importantly, imagine the spiritual journey and path of the mind while running.

In order to achieve this effect for the reader, I did not focus entirely on description of the trees or the natural surroundings, yet, when objects were described, it was to the point that one could visualize them; instead of pure surroundings description, I focused more on the thoughts that I had and the stream of consciousness that I experienced while jogging down that trail. The mood of the piece is contemplative and introspective, philosophical at times.

Despite the fact that there isn't much description, the use of images helps to draw the reader right into the piece. Through the use of the images of the rhythmic jogging through the forest with crunching pine needles, the berry and the squirrel passage, and the view of the mirror-like river, one can form a visual basis for the story. It makes one feel as if they are partaking in the experience. I also used the technique of scientifically describing objects, such as the use of the four forces of physics, the "mass of molecules," and the "computer algorithm" comparison. These add to the general thrust of the piece, talking about the systematic beauty of nature which is scientifically based.

The piece's voice is thoughtful, reassuring, and comfortable to listen to; it sounds like a story that is being read to a child. This is because of the quietness of the subject matter&emdash;the forest at that specific hour of the morning&emdash;and the flow of thoughts from one image to another. That also happens to be the style of the piece: it is like flowing water, moving easily from one thought to another and lightly swirling for the image production.

Overall, the essay has a calming quality to it, much as the jogs that I used to take in the mornings in New York. The reader should feel relaxed when reading it, while embarking on a metaphysical journey his or herself.
