Point 7:
Thesis, Structure, and Style
In meaning, structure, and style, this essay may not be typical of the essays you are most familiar with. An automatic or rigid approach in conceiving and structuring this essay may not work particularly well. It is up to you to decide what will work well, given your subject and your purpose in writing, as it develops. Your essay should have a predominant meaning, but how in your writing will you make this meaning clear? To what extent will you make its meaning (or thesis) explicitly or implicitly clear? What is the most effective way to open and close your essay? Will you frame your essay with opening and closing paragraphs to contextualize and conclude, or would it be more effective simply to enter into and then end the action at an appropriate point? As you move from narration to description to reflection, on what basis will you determine appropriate places for paragraph breaks?
