Stanford provides a variety of computer resources for its academic community, including the distributed UNIX environment called the Leland System. The following classes will give you a basic understanding of how to use these computers.

There is no sign-up required for these classes; they are all held on a first-come, first-served basis. All classes will be held in an interactive classroom in Wilbur Module B, which is located east of Wilbur Hall at the corner of Campus Drive and Escondido Road.

Unix 1
This class provides an introduction to the UNIX operating system
that runs on the workstations in Sweet Hall (HP, Sun and SGI), and
on elaine, tree and amy. Topics in this first class include opening an
account, file system organization, basic system commands, printing and
and communication, information on text editors, and other basic
concepts necessary for the use of the UNIX environment.
Unix 2
This class provides an introduction to the UNIX operating system
that runs on the workstations in Sweet Hall (HP, Sun and SGI), and
on cardinal, tree and amy. Topics in the second class include more
information on UNIX including information on customizing a UNIX
environment and running multiple processes, and using the AFS filing system.
Introduction to X Windows
This class provides an introduction on how to use and customize the
X Window system on the DEC and Sun Unix workstations.
This class provides an introduction to the UNIX-based electronic bulletin
board service. trn, a UNIX news application that can be used to read and to
submit news articles will be demonstrated.
Introduction to Unix Editors
This class provides an introduction to emacs and pico, the
screen-oriented text editors on UNIX systems. It is strongly recommended
that you master the basics taught in the UNIX introductory classes before
before learning emacs and pico.
