I. Opening: Discussion of FlashACE www.stanford.edu/dept/lc/efs/FlashACE/. How did you do? What was the difference between doing the exercise for learning and taking it as a quiz? Do you think the program can help you? Why or why not?

II. Tips in listening to movies for meaning:

    1. Listen by scenes

        - Brief pre-listening (setting & predictions)

        - Try to pick up the main points while listening

        - Post listening: What was the main point? What did you learn about the characters & story? How does this scene move the story along (note, it may not always be obvious even if you understood everything)?

    2. Listen again in depth, pausing after what seem to be important lines (not every line):

        - What did the character say?

        - What does it basically mean?

        - Why did the character mean (if different)?

        - How do stress, intonation, and voice quality help to indicate the intended meaning

III. Groundhog Day continued

IV. Groundhog Day dictation. Listen to the excerpt from www.groundhog.org and try to write down accurately what you hear. Remember that dictation of material you can understand will help you focus on the language forms--grammar and vocabulary

V. Return to Groundhog Day if there is still time.

Homework:

1) Go to www.stanford.edu/dept/lc/efs/FlashACE/. Go through FlashACE Intermediate Lessons 4-5. Listen first for comprehension. Then, for each lesson, try to do dictation on at least three items. Notice what you have to listen to most closely and any mistakes you make--come prepared to discuss your experience.

2) Continue with your independent projects at least 20 minutes every day.

  1. Plan the time each day that you will do your work: track to see how well you follow your plan

  2. Do at least two hours total, but plan for more if you can

  3. The most important part of this is to do something every day, 6 days this week

  4. If something happens and you miss a day, do a morning and an evening session the next day

  5. Be prepared to comment on your results in class next Monday
