EFS 698C: Week 6 Notes

I. Abstract review

II. Lesson 5 answers; introduction to Lesson 6

III. Process Presentations: focus on 1-2 performance issues

IV. Introductions in presentations. The opening 2-3 minutes of your talk are the most critical. Note that for the final week of class, you will be presenting a full 12-15 minute talk on your research. Practicing an introduction to that will be useful.

V. Extra: Notes on proposal writing: What are the reviewers looking for?

VI. Introducing introductions

    A. What is the function of an introduction?

    B. Read and discuss sample introductions

Homework:

1) Rewrite the following  in Williams. 6.1 (4,6); 6.2 (2)

2) Review your video and look for specific areas to improve. In addition, you may include parts of a current piece of writing for our weekly meeting--submit it the night before.

3) Review the clips in IV in more detail, and prepare a 2 to 3-minute minute introduction to a longer talk that is engaging and informative.

4) Bring in examples of two introductions: one good and one with problems. We'll read these in class.
