EFS 698C: Week 6 Notes

I. Writing process (continued)

II. Lesson 4 answers; introduction to Lesson 5

III. Presentation Examples

• Useful websites for models: http://ecorner.stanford.edu; www.ted.com)
• Let's look at the following clips and see what you notice in terms of presentation style and interaction

–Arthur Benjamin

IV. Introductions in presentations. The opening 2-3 minutes of your talk are the most critical. Note that for the final week of class, you will be presenting a full 12-15 minute talk on your research. Practicing an introduction to that will be useful.

V. Notes on proposal writing: What are the reviewers looking for?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Homework:

1) Rewrite the following paragraphs in Williams, focusing on cohesion and coherence. 5.1 (2); 5.2 (2)

2) Work on a current piece of writing of your choice for our weekly meeting (again, meeting is optional).

3) Review the clips in III and IV in more detail, and then do the following.

1) find an example of a speaker online (www.ted.com; http://ecorner.stanford.edu; other) who has one or more characteristics you would like to incorporate into your own speaking.

2) Come prepared next week to present and discuss your example, explaining the element(s) you find worthy of emulating (send me the URL of the clip in advance). Phil's example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLkC7ralR30

3) Then, prepare a 2 to 3-minute minute introduction to a longer talk in which you demonstrate one or two techniques or stylistic points picked up from that speaker as well as making the introduction engaging and informative.
