Workshop Rationale

India is the third largest producer of greenhouse gasses behind China and the United States, and its demand for energy is expected to grow faster than any country on earth in the next two decades. There is thus a shared responsibility as well as tremendous opportunity for academic, government, and industry collaborations in the United States and India to develop sustainable solutions to the climate crisis. Stanford and IIT-B are recognized leaders in climate and energy research but are also uniquely situated in their respective financial and technology hubs, Sillicon Valley and Mumbai. Therefore, a long term collaboration between Stanford and IIT-Bombay on research related to climate and energy is particularly well poised to engage industry partners which are necessary to transition academic research to scalable solutions that will have a significant and lasting impact. This workshop connecting researchers from Stanford and IIT-Bombay is a first step toward developing these partnerships.

Workshop agenda

The workshop will be held over four days. The first three days will be dedicated to presentations and discussions related to the six themes listed below. The fourth day will be devoted to meetings with industry and government partners and discussion of possible future collaborative efforts. A detailed agenda is forthcoming.

  1. Climate Dynamics and Ocean-Atmosphere Interactions
    IIT-B contact: Vishal Dixit

  1. Aerosols, Air Pollution and Health
    IIT-B contact: Chandra Venkataraman

  1. Climate Extremes
    IIT-B contact: Arpita Mondal

  2. Food Energy Water Nexus
    IIT-B contact: Subimal Ghosh

  1. Carbon Cycle and Carbon capture
    IIT-B contact: Arnab Dutta

  1. Sustainable Energy Policy
    IIT-B contact: Trupti Mishra

The specific objectives of the workshop will be to find shared interests among faculty to develop relationships for future collaborative research efforts. There will be ample opportunities for breakout sessions and meetings to help foster such relationships. Possible outcomes from the workshop might include plans for faculty sabbaticals at our respective institutions as well as graduate student exchanges. We will devote a session at the workshop to discuss longer-term partnerships including developing a possible Stanford campus in Mumbai or a shared Stanford-IIT-B MS degree program related to climate and sustainability.
