ED388 SDAIE Assignment:

Meeting the Needs of English Learners in the Content Areas

This assignment has two parts: an oral presentation to a small group, and submission of a written product.

1. Oral Presentation: Using an overhead transparency or copies, you will share with a small group 1-2 lesson plans from your C&I unit (under development) in which you have specifically and thoroughly planned for meeting the academic and language needs of the English learners in your content area.  In your presentation, you will point out the features of your lessons that facilitate English learners’ access to academic language and content.

2. Written Product: The checklist below presents a list of the required items and information, and a recommended order of appearance.

COVER PAGE                                  A single page that identifies:

·        The title of the larger unit in which the learning segment is embedded

·        Your name

·        The course in which the unit will/could be taught

·        The grade(s) level for which the unit is targeted

·        The intended level of English proficiency of students for who the unit is designed

2  LESSON PLANS                           In addition to the format recommended

by your C&I instructor, make sure that each lesson plan includes the following to ensure that you are providing effective SDAIE instruction:

·        Language objectives, including those directed towards developing linguistic forms and functions, and/or subject-specific genres (text-types)

·        Instructional strategies that include specific scaffolding for either oral or written academic English

·        Assessment tied to language objectives

NARRATIVE                                    Approximately 2 pages that describe and explain:

·        How the lessons reflect what you’ve learned about providing effective sheltered instruction.  Specifically, how did you address the language development needs of your EL students and facilitate their access to content language and learning in these lessons? (This is essentially the content of your oral presentation written down.)

·        If applicable, a description of how the lessons went when implemented
