Housing
- Notes from our local friend James:
A general guideline...the farther north in Kihei the less expensive...the
closer to Wailea and to the beach, the more expensive. There is a public
bus that runs about every hour, so if you are staying in north Kihei or even as
far as Maalaea you could use it to get back and forth.

Dress Code
Dress suggestion: Party Attire. No jackets are required for men. Dressy shorts are fine. Woman can wear dresses or pants (and dressy shorts of course). The ceremony will be on the lawn and not on the beach. Following dinner, there will be dancing on a hard floor. Keep in mind that a June day in Maui averages 86 high and 68 low so come dressed comfortably for the weather and partying.
Gifts
Please no gifts, your being able to join us so far away is definitely gift enough!
Local Activities
Local activity recommendations from Eric and Elaine Hahn, our gracious hosts,
and from locals James Lee and Barrie Ayers:
-
Best surfing and wind-surfing and watching
-
10 minutes east of Paia toward Hana: Ho'okipa
-
Best snorkeling!
-
Best nearby snorkeling: Ahihi Cove on the way to La Perouse
-
With a boat: the snorkeling tour of Molokini island (and turtle town).
Go as early in the morning as you can, and
try to leave from Kihei (very close to the house) rather than Ma'alea
-
Local Hiking:
- Great hike (and also horseback riding): Swinging Bridges hike in Waihe'e Valley
- 1 hour up 1 hour back, hike in your bathing suit.
There is swimming under waterfall, it's
very non-touristy, and there's also horse-back riding.
You have to pay.
- Another lovely hike: Twin Falls
- La Perouse bay:
- where the lava flow was in the late 1800's.
- dolphins in the early morning.
- probably don't hike by yourself, and is very sharp. bring a guide.
- Scuba Diving:
James Lee recommends Mike Severins and Ed Robinson
-
The road to Hana is long but worthwhile if you have the time.
James recommends if you have a lot of time, go all the way around, you see the back side of the island.
There is a nice hike at Waimoku falls.
- Camping:
If you want to spend some time in Hana there
is now an online reservation system for cabins in the various state parks:
http://hawaiistateparks.org/parks/maui/
The park closest to Hana is Wai'anapanapa (#7 on the map). James says the cabins are rustic, the location is fabulous.
-
Haleakala
-
The Haleakala crater is worth seeing (trail on the crater rim),
but they don't think sunrise is worth it
-
for a short visit: the rim is ok but it's a long drive (2.5 hours)
-
for a real hike, but short: taking the sliding sands trail from the visitors center
-
The bike ride down from the crater: probably worth doing, but the trip no longer
leaves from inside the park, so they start you outside the park,
so is less beautiful.
-
Other Upcountry Stuff
-
Kula lodge: Zip line! This zip line is better than the Lahaina zip line and less touristy.
-
Goat Dairy!
-
Makawao:
- Casanova's italian restaurant, live music on weekend
- There are Rodeos on july 4, so there may already be practices at the time of the wedding.
- There are municipal stables there.
-
Haile'maile General Store has excellent food (is the caterer for the wedding).
-
Other stuff:
- Paia is recommended: funky hippy rasta surfers, good food, Flatbread Pizza.
Nearby: Mama's Fish House, best seafood on Maui but very expensive ($50 entrees).
The New York Times had an article on Paia the other day
-
For little kids: Maui Ocean Center is a very good small aquarium
and there is a great bumper-boat place near there.
- Maui Plantation: touristy. golf-carty.
- Helicopter tour: Eric and Elaine hadn't tried it
Two possible luaus, both in Lahaina
We also found this site, which is easy to read and organized,
but (disclaimer) we haven't actually used her services:
