Assignment 9, Problem 1 |

Among his other works, Duchamp's "Nude descending a staircase" is particularly remarkable for its novel portrayal of animation in a static medium. This assignment, whose objective was to "draw a [self]-portrait in the style of Duchamp," is an imitation of the duchampian depiction of motion. The use of gradients, for instance -- rather than repeating the figure with the same color -- is meant to add a dimension of time to this static image. Fellow MAS110 student Christine Yen writes: although this piece is "an exceedingly abstract work of lines and geometric shapes in which neither a nude figure nor a staircase is immediately discernable" it still manages to "include a sense of dynamism" in the style of Duchamp. |
