Murrietta Falls has been rated the most brutal hikes in the Bay Area with about 4050ft of climbing (gain/loss) over 14 miles. Dave and I did this hike on Sat, March 5th along with Harv & Sam. Murrietta Falls is the highest fall in the Bay Area. The elevation at the start of the trail (parking lot at Del Valle Lake) is 750ft then it's straight up to the sign-in post at 1500ft. We didn't see more than 3 hikers on the way to the falls. Ohlone Wilderness is the most isolated especially during the winter months. The highest point of the hike is about 3400ft. Of all the hikes I've done, this was the most up and down with less than 10% of the trail on level ground. The views at the highest points of the trail were just breathtaking; we had a clear day that we were able to see the snow covered high Sierras, Santa Cruz mountains, and San Francisco Bay along with a few cities in the East Bay. If you've never done the Murietta Falls hike from Lake Del Valle in Livermore and missed a chance to see water flowing through it, now's your chance. Trails were muddy in spots but overall it's a good time to check it out (mind the cows on the trail). This is also the perfect time of the year to see the wild flowers
