Acquisitions staff will derive cataloging records for microfilmed GSB dissertations from existing CARL cataloging records for the print versions of those dissertations. Acquisitions staff will modify the derived records according to Acquisitions guidelines for deriving cataloging records in CARL.
The only field that
will need to be added to the bibliographic record, at the point of cataloging,
is the 533 (reproduction note) field. The following is an example of the
text of a 533 field: ^aMicrofilm.^bAnn Arbor, Mich. :^cUniversity Microfilms
International,^d1995.^e1 microfilm reel ; 35 mm. (Note: The date of
reproduction--the ^d subfield in the 533 field--will usually be the same as the
year the degree was granted, as
reflected in the 260 and 502 fields.) After
the bib record has been processed and written to the live file, edit the item
record (the correct Media code is MCRO)and barcode the box of microfilm.
Once the cataloging has been completed, note each microfilmed GSB dissertation as 1 microfilm on your
cataloging statistics sheet for monographs.
In the case of later editions, acquistions staff will first search RLIN for useable, matching cataloging copy. If copy is not found, Acquisitions staff will derive a cataloging record from an existing CARL cataloging record for an earlier editions, if available., according to Acquisitions guidelines for deriving cataloging records in CARL. Once forwarded to Cataloging, the Head of Cataloging will modify the derived record appropriately. Note: Acquisitions staff will indicate RLIN searching information (i.e., 0RLIN) when forwarding item to Cataloging.
