Comments:

Can you make out North America with the Gulf of Mexico? And also the Pelican to its right? Just the North American Nebula itself covers an area about 10 times the diameter of a full moon. Despite its size, it is nearly impossible to see due to its faintness and diffuse shape, except under very dark sky.

This is a good example of an emission nebula. The nebulosity is caused by clouds of ionized hydrogen around 1600 light-years away. It is shaped by dark lanes from interstellar dust that absorbs light from the background stars and nebulosity.
