New Concepts for New Challenges

In New Concepts for New Challenges:  Professional Development for Teachers of Immigrant Youth (1997) Gonzalez and Darling-Hammond argue that in order to prepare teachers to "initiate and sustain new relationships with a more diverse student population," we need "creative new ways of conceptualizing professional development" (p. 29).  While the authors do briefly introduce components of effective classroom practice for teachers of linguistically diverse students, their main focus is on the process of teacher education itself.  Included below are several of their central points.
