UN Conference
Oct. 3, 2001
United Nations Association of the United States (UNA-USA) Midpeninsula
will hold a Mid-Pacific UNA Regional Conference on November 10, 2001
at Stanford University.
Under the theme of "Is the UN an Endangered Species?", there
will be five topics:
- Today's Critical World Issues: the UN's Role in Addressing Them
- The UN Conference on Racism: Results and Implications
- The UN and the Global Health Crisis
- Security Issues: Peacekeeping and Arms Control
- US Relations with the United Nations
Just after the 9-11 attack, I think its right time for American
people to think about some serious questions, both national and international.
Why America became the target of terrorism? Its simply an
attack to freedom, or there also exist other political reasons?
How can we control the worldwide underground arms exchange? How can
we prevent the terrorists getting the arms? Whats role of the
UN in keeping worldwide peace? And, especially, whats role of
the UN in the coming America-centered war against terrorism? Whether
the US plays a leading role in the UN, or overrides the UN? All the
questions are critical. So the topics in this conference will have
additional attraction at this time. The questions may not be fully
answered in the conference, but the lectures giving by Jeffrey Laurenti,
Executive Director of Policy Studies at UNA-USA, Barbara Boxer, US
Senator, and other political people and some professionals may offer
the audience some perspectives to look into this kind of issues.
