Sontag stresses her position as necessary because of how mired we have become in interpretation. She suggests that we have even lost our ability simply to see, to experience works of art. Her mandate: "What is important now is to recover our senses. We must learn to see more, to hear more, to feel more." (Sontag, 14). Wilson begins the work of allowing us to do this by making these senses apparent to us. In his early work especially, what is there to do but look and listen? To see more, to hear more. He uses light and time to make the very seeing we are doing something worth writing about. Wilson produces art that escapes the kind of interpretation Sontag rallies against by drawing such clear attention to what it is we are doing (seeing), rather than what it is he is meaning.
