So here we reflect on Furuhashi's experience of perceiving his Mother's death as a machine that
suddenly stops recording her patterns. The periodic beeping of a heart monitor becomes like a metonym for "aliveness,"
it's cessation, "death." We look at the monitor stopping and say "she's dead."
Here medical science mediates
the border between life and death not by prolonging the one or bringing the other, but by telling us exactly
when and where the line has been crossed. Medical technology becomes so contiguous with the processes of life that we can
call them by the same name.
