Considerations for Team Formation

Project preference
All team members should have a desire to work on the same project.
Team's engineering skill set
The team's expertise should match up with the project's fabrication requirements.
Personality
There should be a compatible mix of personalities in the team.
Friends and team members
A good friend does not necessarily make a good team mate.

Questions to ask Potential Project Team Members

  1. Do you have fabrication / PRL experience?
  2. Do you have sufficient time to devote to this project?
  3. Are you taking other project courses this quarter?
  4. Do you have a passion for this project?
  5. Is there any reason that you would not make a good team member?

Team Formation Preparedness

Since there is no guarantee that other students will have similar project interests, you should be prepared to do one of the following:

  1. convince others to work with you on one of your selected projects
  2. consider working with another student on a project he/she has chosen
  3. keep an open mind

Available Team Projects

Here is a listing of available team projects with links to their descriptions in the order of their pitch presentation. (Projects that have already been chosen by a project team are not shown.)

Project Selection & Team Formation Procedure

Procedure:

  1. Make sure the project your are interested in is available
  2. Refer to Preference by Projects and contact other students who have similar project interests
  3. Verify their desire and availability to work on the project
  4. Once a team of three or four is formed, email Dave with your project selection, team members, and team name (optional)

Policies:

  1. Students currently on this Wait List can be chosen to be on a project team, but their official enrollment in the course is still pending.
  2. Teams will have three or four members
  3. The Magical Bridge Playground Project can support two teams
  4. Projects are reserved on a "first to email" basis

Short Description:

My name is Sal, a current co-term in MechE (Design undergrad) and I like all things design, especially the interactive aspects (working with people/users). I've worked on many fabrication projects through the CHARM Lab and PRL/ME courses and can work with any processes (maybe except weld). As far as workload this quarter goes, I'm also in ME210 (Mechatronics), a light 1 unit design course and am a CA for the new Clubhouse (CHIP).

sts (bs)

Short Description:

Hello! I am a junior majoring in Mechanical Engineering with a strong interest in human-centered design. I have completed ME 102 and am currently enrolled in ME 103, and I spend significant time in the Product Realization Lab (PRL), where I am very familiar with the available tools, fabrication processes, and resources. I have hands-on experience with prototyping and enjoy iterating designs based on testing and user needs.

Through past student projects and coursework, I have developed solid skills in fabrication, teamwork, presentation, and technical report writing. I manage my time well and have a moderate workload this quarter, but I am committed to contributing consistently and reliably to a team.

My passion for this course is deeply personal: growing up as a caregiver for my grandmother with limited mobility shaped my desire to design solutions that improve quality of life for people with disabilities and older adults. I am highly motivated to work on projects that combine empathy, engineering, and practical impact to make everyday tasks easier and more accessible.

Coterm student here: BS Mechanical Engineering (Product Realization Concentration) and MS Computer Science

At Stanford, I've taken ME102, ME103, ME104, ME127, ME128, ME129, and ME170, all of which involved substantial work in the PRL. Beyond school, I’ve done hands-on mechanical design work during internships at NVIDIA, Google, and Xos Trucks.

For my senior capstone project, I worked on an off-road wheelchair attachment for Kyaro Assistive Tech, which was a super rewarding experience. I got to travel to Tanzania and even meet with some wheelchair users we were designing for!

I am pretty free on Monday Wednesdays, and Fridays (no class those days). My Tuesday and Thursday mornings and Thursday evenings are also pretty free.
