Richard N. Boyd

“Creating a Star in the Laboratory: the National Ignition Facility”

Biography:  Richard N. Boyd is the Science Director for the National Ignition Facility with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.  He is also a Professor of Physics and a Professor of Astronomy at Ohio State University.
In 1967 he earned his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Minnesota.  His research interests include:  Experimental Nuclear Physics, Nuclear Physics, Neutrino Astrophysics, and Particle Astrophysics.

Dr. Boyd has more than 200 publications and one graduate level textbook on Nuclear Astrophysics.

Abstract:  Sometime in 2009 the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is expected to focus its 192 laser beams onto a millimeter sized target to compress and heat it to a temperature about an order of magnitude higher than exists at the core of the Sun. The goal of this project near term is to achieve inertial confinement fusion in a deuterium-tritium pellet, but the longer term goal is to foster a world-class user program in basic science. I will first describe what is being done to achieve inertial confinement fusion, then will talk about some of the science, mostly in astrophysics, that has been done on high-powered laser facilities in the recent past and that is being planned for the near future at NIF.
