Overview
Recitations are jumbo-sized sections where you will meet each week with your classmates and one or more TAs to go over material from the previous week's lectures. These recitations might involve supplemental instruction some weeks, and will typically involve working through exercises in small groups. Our goals are:
- to provide additional reinforcement and exercises designed to help everyone level up their understanding of the course material;
- to offer a structured way to help everyone stay current with lecture material and engage meaningfully with content without digital distractions;
- to give everyone additional, dedicated times when they have direct access to our phenomenal TAs; and
- to help everyone plug into a sense of community surrounding this course at a time when AI reliance is leading to an increased sense of isolation among students on college campuses nationwide.
The key dates for recitation sign-up are:
- Sign-up period: Week 1 (through Friday, Sept. 25, 11:59 PM) (via Google form)
- Swap/opt-out period: Week 3 (through Sunday, Oct. 11, 11:59 PM) (via the dashboard)
After the swap/opt-out period, it will not be possible to join a recitation. Anyone who has not joined a recitation by that time will be considered opted out, and the 5% of their grade originally set aside for recitation engagement will be reapportioned to their exams.
Here are some of our expectations for recitation:
- 🧠 Active participation and engagement are required in order to earn full credit for recitation.
- ✏️ Bring a pen or pencil for working through problems on paper. (Paper will be provided!)
- 💻 Recitations are digital-device-free. No laptops or cellphones during recitation, please.
- 📚 You'll want to already be caught up on lectures, including from the most recent Monday.
- 📸 Your TAs will have you upload a worksheet selfie to a Google form to verify participation.
Policies and FAQ
Here are some questions we have been receiving.
Everyone is welcome to do this once this quarter without checking in with anyone about it. If you need to do this more than once, please reach out to Joyce and Sean for approval.
Note that the Tuesday 10:30 and 11:30 AM recitations are in small rooms with very limited seating, and so we have to ask that you not attend those recitations without checking with Joyce and Sean first, unless you are officially enrolled in them. We're very sorry about that.
We don't anticipate granting recitation absences except in greatly extenuating circumstances. If you have something very serious come up, please contact Joyce and Sean directly to discuss.
Head over to our Spiffy Recitation Dashboard. It's your one-stop shop for joining a recitation if you missed the sign-up period, swapping into a new one if you're already enrolled, or dropping your recitation and officially opting out of having it count toward your final grade in the course.
We'll aim to post materials on this page on Wednesday evenings, after all recitations have concluded for the week. If Thursday ever rolls around and materials haven't been posted, feel free to ping Sean directly!
We hope to eventually integrate this into the Spiffy Recitation Dashboard, but in the meantime, we ask that everyone keep track of their attendance and engagement individually. If you have questions about whether your level of engagement is meeting expectations, please feel free to touch base with your recitation TA in person.
