Title: What are Knowledge Graphs, and why do we need them?
Speaker: Chaitanya Baru
Abstract
This talk will provide a distinctly "data-driven" view of
knowledge graphs, and why we need them. Graphical representations
for digital data have arguably existed since the early days of
data processing. Starting from there, we will look at the current
explosion in data -- both in corporate and scientific databases,
as well as on the Web -- and how the need to make sense of and
"leverage" all of this data has naturally led to the notion of
knowledge graphs. Notwithstanding deep philosophical and technical
discussions about "knowledge" and "knowledge representation",
knowledge graphs are, in the end, practical artifacts that drive
powerful real-world applications. By way of example, we will
discuss five different projects funded by the National Science
Foundation as part of its Open Knowledge Network track (see here.)
in the Convergence Accelerator program.
