1. What can space really do in the ways of learning?

Safe environment

Physical affordances: e.g. designed for individual or collaborative work (single table or long table, sofa, seating arrangement, whiteboards etc.)

Creating Mood: e.g. Bright colors liven up, helps in brainstorming e.g. Natural lighting, line of sight, encourages communication e.g. artpieces -> inspiration Encourages exploration

Facilitate sharing/communication e.g. Open concept, high ceilings, space to move around

Ownership/Personalised Settings e.g. control of own lighting e.g. generous table space

2. Why this set of readings?

Learning in informal settings is also related to space design.

'rolf' - safety is certainly a big part of a good learning space, but why? does it allow people to focus on other knowledge instead of worrying about being safe? I like the idea of creating a mood - that's not something that I consciously think about, but I definitely appreciate. I think that there is a lot more involved with facilitating sharing than just open space... the physical affordances that you talk about... I know one of the article talked about the culture in the environment as being integral... the space has to help create a culture of sharing ideas
