This seminar, the only course required of all Ph.D. students in English,
has two separate but complementary purposes: first, to study a series of influential
theoretical texts within a group setting and, second, to discuss some practical
matters ranging from writing conference papers to preparing for the job market.
These texts were selected to help stimulate thinking toward projects students
might undertake both during their period as graduates and later in their academic
careers. The practical topics, as well as the faculty members and graduate
students making presentations, were selected jointly after discussions with
faculty and student representatives.
Since the practical sessions, entitled "Introduction to the Profession,"
have not been offered since 1999, members of this year's second-year class
are invited to join first-year students, who will be required to attend as
part of their work in English 396. These sessions will be held each Monday
at noon in the Terrace Room directly after the pedagogy class taken by first-year
students. "Foundational Texts in 20th-Century Theory" will meet
Tuesday afternoon from 3:15 to 5:05 in 460-429.
